Two Georgian men were hospitalized over the weekend after ingesting household chemicals as part of a botched effort to prevent them from transmitting coronavirus, according to sources.
Gaylord Lopez, director of the Georgia Poison Control Center, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday that two people in Atlanta, each with a history of mental health issues, were hospitalized after swallowing household chemicals “to avoid Covid.” A man in his 50s living in southwest Atlanta was hospitalized on Saturday after drinking at least 16 ounces of bleach. The second man, who lived in Atlanta in the 30s, was hospitalized on Sunday after taking a Pine-Sol drink, mouthwash, beer, and pain medicine.
Both men, whose names have not been released by the authorities, were later admitted to the mental facility for observation before being discharged and are believed to be all right.
Last week, President Trump caused outrage after seeming to say, at a White House press conference, that people could be fired with light beams or sprayed with a disinfectant to remove coronavirus.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany also said Trump’s comments had been taken out of context. Trump himself said the next day that he was being “sarcastic.”
Lysol, headquartered in the United Kingdom, Reckitt Benckiser Group, released a statement hours after the President sent a warning. “under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body”
In March and April – both before and after the President’s remarks – the Georgia Poison Control Center issued 116 requests for the abuse of household cleaning programs. This compares to the 49 calls earned over the same time last year.
In the first three months of this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 20% rise in the number of calls to poison centers around the country for disinfectants.
At this time, cleaning supplies began flying off the shelves, causing people to improvise when they tried to scrub their homes as the outbreak began to escalate in the United States.
