Slovenia considers itself to be the first European country to put the coronavirus to an end within its boundaries.
The government of the European Union state said Friday that the spread of COVID-19 is under control, and that further health initiatives are no longer required.
“Today Slovenia has the best epidemic situation in Europe, which enables us to call off the general epidemic,” Prime Minister Janez Jansa said.
According to Slovenia, EU citizens are free to fly from Austria , Italy and Hungary to Slovenia at designated checkpoints, while most non-EU nationals will have to undergo a compulsory 14-day quarantine in what is a big development for the tiny Alpine country as it accelerates restriction relief.
Financial assistance to coronavirus-affected residents and companies is due to expire at the end of the month, says Reuters.
The first case of coronavirus was reported on March 4 in Slovenia, a citizen who returned from neighboring Italy. On March 12th the national outbreak was declared.
By 13 May Slovenia had 1,467 confirmed cases and 103 deaths.
