A 21-year-old man was killed after being shot in late Friday during protests in Detroit, the police department in the city said. A corresponding police press release said the man was shot after an anonymous gunman fired shots from a car into a crowd. Further analysis found the bullets fired into a car by the anonymous suspect at 11:30 p.m. (12:30 a.m. ET) and the occupants fled from the vehicle including the victim.

During the altercation the shooter was shot at some point, and later died in a hospital, the revised release said.
Detroit is one of many cities across the U.S. that saw controversial protests overnight in Minneapolis police custody on Saturday over the death of George Floyd, a black man. Over the course of the night the police made dozens of arrests.
Detroit police can not establish that the gunman was part of the protesters, but the incident took place in downtown, where the demonstrations took place. Police in Detroit was investigating.

Earlier, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said a individual was charged after trying to drive over an officer. A command officer was hit by a protestor throwing rock and taken to hospital. Many of those arrested are not Detroit town residents, Craig added.

“I will not stand by and let a small minority of criminals come in here, attack our officers and make our community unsafe. Just know, we are not going to tolerate it,” Craig said.
