We have no idea how much money Google makes with hardware, “wrote marketwatch two years ago.
That’s not entirely true – the company’s hardware division is a “billion dollar” deal, which the company announced during Mutter Alphabet’s Q4 earnings call (via 9to5Google).
This suggests that hardware costs at least $ 2 billion, but theoretically a little more: Google’s hardware companies are subscribed to subscription services such as YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium in the “Other” category of Google, which totals a total of 17Billions of dollars in sales in 2019.
Even if we knew how much of it was hardware, it would be hard to say which devices are the most stressful, be it pixel phones or laptops; nest doorbells, cameras, speakers, routers, and thermostats; or (less likely) Chromecast dongles.
For example, Google has never figured out sales or revenue for its Pixel phones, although we know they have been having trouble for some time, and the frequent sales since the launch of Pixel 4 have not been a promising sign. (Although Google is launching the cheaper onePixel 3A cheered with the news that it sold twice as many pixels in the first quarter.) Even though it was good news when the company announced that the original Google Wifi had become the best-selling wifi router, it has not released sales figures.
Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh told us last May that the company’s hardware numbers were “good, but not where we want to be after five years,” and that’s the kind of vague guide with which we had to come to terms with.
Now we have a slightly better idea – though not nearly as good as Google for YouTube, whose unprecedented earnings add up to $ 15 billion a year.
Google’s Sundar Pichai also announced today how much money the company has written to the Android app developer over the years – $ 80 billion so far, probably since the launch of the Android Market (now Google Play) in 2008.
About a year ago, Apple mentioned it shared $ 120 billion with App Store developers.
