83 wealthiest people called governments to increase taxes

83 of the wealthiest people in the world have called on “our governments to increase taxes on people like us” to help finance the economic rebound from the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Guardian.

“When Covid-19 hits the world, millionaires like us have a critical role to play in rebuilding our world,” reads the letter in part. “Actually, we ‘re not the ones who take care of the sick in intensive care. They don’t operate the ambulances that will take the injured to the hospitals. They are not rebuilding grocery store shelves or delivering food door to door. But we’ve got a lot of money. Money that is desperately needed now and will continue to be needed in the years ahead, as our planet recovers from the crisis.

The letter went on to say that the effects of the pandemic would “last decades” and could “drive half a billion more people into poverty.”

Also on Monday, the United Nations said that the world’s hungry population increased by 10 million last year and cautioned that coronavirus could drive as many as 130 million more people into chronic hunger this year.

The bleak review was included in the latest edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the Region, an annual report published by five U.N. It’s departments.

Preliminary forecasts based on available global economic outlook indicate that the pandemic “may add an additional 83 (million) to 132 million undernourished people in 2020,” the study said.
