Los Angeles County reported 3,187 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, the largest daily number since the start of the pandemic, according to health officials on Sunday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced an rise of 7,232 new cases on Thursday, Friday and Saturday after the department had taken a few days off, which officials said was for “improving data processing systems.” At least 30 new deaths were also announced, which may be undercounted as confirmed COVID-19 deaths are awaiting verification.
“We send our condolences and prayers to the families who have lost their loved ones to COVID-19. You ‘re still in our thoughts every day, “said Barbara Ferrer, Director of Public Health.
Los Angeles County beaches remain restricted to the public for all outdoor events over the Fourth of July weekend to restrict the dissemination of COVID-19, with firework shows banned from dissuading large audiences in the wake of recent incidents.
In addition to Friday, the Department recorded 2,643 new cases on Thursday and 1,402 new cases on Saturday. Last Monday, the previous high in daily cases was announced at 2,903.
The same day, Ferrer warned that the outbreak was worsening and said that new data show “alarming increases in cases, positivity rates, and hospitalization signals that we, as a community, need to take immediate action to slow down the spread of COVID-19.”
“Otherwise, we ‘re fast moving towards overwhelming our healthcare system and seeing even more devastating illness and death,” she said.
Gov. Gavin Newson also ordered the re-closing of bars last week, as well as indoor operations for restaurants, wineries, film theaters, and family entertainment venues in 19 counties — including Los Angeles.
“This doesn’t mean the restaurants are shut down,” Newsom, a Democrat, said in a briefing. “It means that we are trying to take as many activities as we can — these mixed activities, these concentrated activities — and move them outdoors, which is a way to mitigate the spread of this virus.”
As of Saturday, health officials said there are 1,921 patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in LA County, with 28 per cent in ICU and 18 per cent in ventilators.
“As we move into the next two weeks, we will need to ensure that workplaces and retailers protect their employees and customers by fully implementing the safety directives in the Health Officers’ Order,” Ferrer said.
Los Angeles County has seen more than 114,993 reported cases of coronavirus since the onset of the pandemic and nearly 3,500 deaths, according to L.A. statistics. Department of Public Health, District.
