Firearm-related background checks exceeded 3.9 million in June, the highest since the monitoring program was set up over two decades ago, and “people are being met with a harsh dose of truth” in the light of demands to “defund” the police, gun-rights activist Colion Noir said on Sunday.
Noir said “Fox & Friends Weekend” host Jedediah Bila that more Americans are beginning to realize, “They are the only person responsible for their health.”
He went on to say, “Understanding that and seeing the restrictions that the government can afford in terms of their protection, they realize, well, maybe the concept of a Second Amendment is starting to make a lot more sense now than it would have been a few months ago, or maybe a few years ago.”
Gun sales soared back in March as governments across the United States began issuing stay-at – home orders and other drastic lock-down measures as the coronavirus took hold across the world.
Belief in the possession of weapons continued as the economy deteriorated rapidly and civil unrest erupted following George Floyd ‘s death on May 25, which prompted calls to de-fund police forces around the country.
“I think it’s sort of ironic,” Noir said of the campaign. “There are a lot of people before where we are right now… who said, ‘You don’t need a weapon, you have a police force.’ Fast forward to where we are today, and a lot of the same people are thinking, ‘We should pay off the cops.'”
Noir said that while such a move would be “ridiculous,” the national exposure he has gained has left many people in fear for their health.
“I want to feel that I can call someone to defend me when I need it,” he explained, “but now that we’re seeing people on the national level talking about de-funding the police, well, at that point, the only thing I can do is depend on myself to get a gun to protect myself, because I’m not sure there’s going to be a police on the other end of the line or to be able to get there when I need it.
