Iranian authorities, furious at the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, allegedly released an arrest warrant for President Trump – but the U.S. considers it a “propaganda stunt.”
The statement was made Monday by Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr, who informed the state-run IRNA media outlet that Trump and 35 others were facing “murder and terrorism charges” in connection with the January 3 attack in Bagdad that killed the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force.
Alqasimehr was quoted as saying that Iran had requested Interpol to send a “red notice” to Trump and others – the highest-level arrest warrant provided by the international body.
Subsequently, Interpol released a statement saying that its Notice Rules preclude it from “any intervention or activity of a political nature” and that it “would not consider requests” of that kind.
Brian Hook, the U.S. Special Representative for Iran, rejected the arrest warrant statement at a press conference in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
“It’s a propaganda stunt that no one takes seriously and makes the Iranians look foolish,” Hook said.
During a January attack near Baghdad International Airport, the U.S. killed Soleimani and others. It came after months of growing friction between the two nations. Iran also retaliated with a ballistic missile attack at American forces in Baghdad.
Alqasimehr did not name someone who wanted other than Trump, but emphasized that Iran would continue to seek his indictment long after his presidency had ended.
