Michigan’s attorney general advised President Trump to wear a face mask as he toured the state on Thursday to tour the Ford Motor Co. factory to conform to the Coronavirus Executive Order of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, informing the Chief Commander that he had a “moral duty” to obey the rule.
Dana Nessel, a Democrat, sent an open letter to Trump Wednesday urging him to follow the face-covering practices of Ford Motor Co. and the state of Michigan. Trump was not seen carrying a face mask in public and claimed he was using hydroxychloroquine, an unproven medication named COVID-19, as a prevention measure to contain the infectious virus.
“While my Department will not act to prevent you from touring Ford’s plant, I ask that while you are on tour you respect the great efforts of the men and women at Ford – and across this state – by wearing a facial covering,” Nessel wrote. “It is not just the policy of Ford, by virtue of the Governor’s Executive Orders. It is currently the law of this State.”
Meanwhile, Whitmer accused Trump for trying to withdraw federal funding from Michigan in the wake of the pandemic and major rains in central Michigan after two dams burst this week.
Trump originally challenged on Twitter, saying that Michigan was in difficulty sending out absentee ballots to electors that he found perfect for electoral fraud. Like other nations, Michigan has sent out absentee applications. Trump corrected his tweet — but there was a threat to Michigan without federal dollars. The Secretary of State of Michigan said Trump was still wrong.
Yet the issue of whether Trump’s wearing a mask was front and center before Trump entered the crucial swing state.
Michigan has been particularly hard hit by coronavirus, with more than 50,000 confirmed cases and 5,000 deaths.
“We must all do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19,” Nessel wrote. “Anyone who has potentially been recently exposed, including the President of the United States, has not only a legal responsibility, but also a social and moral responsibility, to take reasonable precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.”
